The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians (HBMI) is a federally recognized tribal government that provides health and social services to approximately 1,700 tribal members, primarily in the Littleton, Maine area. The organization operates a health and wellness center in Houlton, Maine, and maintains a tribal administration office in Littleton, Maine. HBMI provides services including a medical clinic, behavioral health and substance use services, fitness center, elder care, domestic violence and sexual assault services, and health center transportation. The tribe is authorized by the federal government to govern its own affairs and facilitate access to Indian Health Services (IHS) and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs for its members. HBMI was federally recognized in 1980.
