Great to meet you

Volunteers of America Utah is a community-supported organization that has served vulnerable populations for 40 years since 1986. The organization provides comprehensive services across three main areas: homelessness, addiction treatment, and mental health. For homelessness, VOA Utah offers year-round support including shelters, meals, basic needs, education, employment services, legal aid, housing assistance, and physical and mental health care. For addiction, the organization operates Men's Detox Center and Center for Women and Children, offering acceptance, safety, and care to support individuals on their road to sobriety. For mental health services, VOA Utah operates Cornerstone Counseling Center and Family Counseling Center to reduce the impact of mental illness and facilitate improvements in well-being. The organization serves over 9,400 people annually and provides 427,000 meals yearly across the Salt Lake Valley.

Evidence-based approaches

Activity therapy

Activity Therapy. Structured therapeutic activities, recreation, movement, hands-on tasks, used as a vehicle for connection and emotional regulation. Often paired with talk therapy in residential and group programs.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Spots the thought-feeling-action loops that fuel urges, then rewires them with practical skills you take into the moment.

Dialectical behavior therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Pairs acceptance with change. Especially useful when emotions feel too big to ride out without acting on them.

Group therapy

Group Therapy. A small facilitated circle where people working on similar struggles practice naming what is hard, hearing themselves in others, and learning skills together. The room is the medicine.

Integrated mental and substance use disorder treatment

Integrated Treatment. Treats addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions in the same plan, rather than sequentially. Most clinically effective when both are present.

Individual psychotherapy

Individual Psychotherapy. One-to-one sessions with a licensed clinician. The standard-bearer of mental-health care; most evidence-based plans build around it.
