Great to meet you

The VA provides mental health services to veterans and transitioning service members. Services include support for posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, military sexual trauma, suicide prevention, and readjustment to civilian life. Care is available through multiple access points including VA medical centers, Vet Centers, and telehealth platforms. Services range from peer support with other veterans to counseling, therapy, and medication management. Crisis support is available 24/7 through the Veterans Crisis Line. Veterans do not need to be enrolled in VA health care or have a specific discharge status to access mental health services.

Evidence-based approaches

Activity therapy

Activity Therapy. Structured therapeutic activities, recreation, movement, hands-on tasks, used as a vehicle for connection and emotional regulation. Often paired with talk therapy in residential and group programs.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Spots the thought-feeling-action loops that fuel urges, then rewires them with practical skills you take into the moment.

Couples/family therapy

Family Therapy. Brings the people closest to the recovery into the room. Less about blame, more about updating the patterns that fed the cycle so the home becomes part of the recovery.

Group therapy

Group Therapy. A small facilitated circle where people working on similar struggles practice naming what is hard, hearing themselves in others, and learning skills together. The room is the medicine.

Integrated mental and substance use disorder treatment

Integrated Treatment. Treats addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions in the same plan, rather than sequentially. Most clinically effective when both are present.

Individual psychotherapy

Individual Psychotherapy. One-to-one sessions with a licensed clinician. The standard-bearer of mental-health care; most evidence-based plans build around it.

Telemedicine/telehealth therapy

Telehealth Therapy. Real clinical sessions delivered over video. Same evidence base as in-person care for most conditions; meets you where you actually are instead of where the office is.
