St. Mark's Place Institute for Mental Health, also known as UNITAS, was founded by Dr. Roman Pabis to provide comprehensive, patient-centered treatment for mental health and substance use disorders. The practice emphasizes a systems approach that addresses biological, social, and familial factors influencing health. Treatment incorporates lifestyle changes through diet, nutrition, and exercise alongside mental and physical health management. The clinic originated in the early 1980s to serve Polish immigrants and other populations in the New York area who faced language barriers and needed accessible psychiatric care. The institute is licensed by NYS Office of Mental Health and NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services, and holds contracts with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Federal Courts.
