The VA (Department of Veterans Affairs) provides mental health services to veterans from all service eras, including Operation Enduring Freedom, Iraq War, Gulf War, Cold War Era, Vietnam War, Korean War, and World War II. Services are available to veterans regardless of discharge status or VA health care enrollment. The VA offers support for PTSD, depression, suicide prevention, military sexual trauma, substance use problems, anxiety, grief, and adjustment to civilian life. Over 1.7 million veterans received mental health services at the VA last year. Services range from peer support with other veterans to counseling, therapy, medication, or combinations of these options. Veterans can access care by calling or walking into any VA medical center or Vet Center, or by calling 877-222-8387 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET). Online resources include the Veteran Training self-help portal, mental health apps, and telemental health services via computer or mobile device. A 24/7 Veterans Crisis Line is available by calling 988 and selecting 1.
