The Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a cabinet-level state agency established in 1974. The department serves approximately 170,000 Missourians annually through state-operated facilities and contracts with private organizations. DMH's three principal missions are prevention of mental disorders, developmental disabilities, substance abuse, and compulsive gambling; treatment, habilitation, and rehabilitation of individuals with these conditions; and improvement of public understanding and attitudes. The department operates seven state-operated psychiatric facilities providing inpatient psychiatric care for adults and children, as well as sex offender rehabilitation and treatment services. Additionally, DMH operates five habilitation centers and six regional offices serving individuals with developmental disabilities, and contracts with approximately 1,300 private programs statewide.
