The Indian Health Service is the Federal Health Program for American Indians and Alaska Natives operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. IHS provides health care services to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native populations through a network of area offices and health facilities across the country, including 12 designated area offices covering regions such as Alaska, Albuquerque, Bemidji, Billings, California, Great Plains, Nashville, Navajo, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Portland, and Tucson. The agency offers various health services including behavioral health, community health, environmental health, health promotion, and patient education, with programs addressing injury prevention, nutrition, and school health. IHS supports both direct service delivery and purchased/referred care options for eligible patients.
