Butler Hospital is a non-profit, free-standing psychiatric hospital founded in 1844 serving adults, seniors, and adolescents. It provides specialized assessment and treatment for major psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse. As the major affiliated teaching hospital for psychiatry and behavioral health of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Butler Hospital offers comprehensive services across three primary settings: inpatient programs, partial hospital programs, and intensive outpatient programs. The hospital employs approximately 900 clinical and non-clinical staff and is recognized as a national leader in psychiatric and substance abuse treatment, including pioneering work in opening one of the first outpatient programs in the late 1950s and the first partial hospital substance abuse program in the early 1970s.
