Originally established as the Laredo State Center in 1979 by the Texas Legislature to provide mental health and mental retardation services, the organization transitioned to a community-based model on September 1, 2000. In 2011, it was renamed Border Region Behavioral Health Center and is designated as a Local Mental Health Authority and a Mental Retardation Authority. The organization currently employs 360 people serving 9,313 clients with a budget of 28 million dollars. The Center is located in Laredo, Texas, and operates a 24-hour crisis hotline, an inquiry line for the YES Waiver program, and a First Episode Psychosis program.
